Today's rant is regarding the shown brand. I have a severe problem with Coach. It stems from the company's business model. Coach wants to provide customers with "fashionable consumer luxury" goods. There's a problem with this business model: it's oxymoronic (not to sure that's a word...but still...the concept's there). How do you provide something that is luxurious but also consumer-friendly?
Yes having a Coach bag is excessive, but it's not a luxury. It's not a luxury if almost every other person has a Coach bag. I'm by all means not saying Coach is cheap. What I'm saying is that they've made their products too accessible, and it cheapens the brand. There are plenty of fashionably respectable brands that offer accessories very similarly priced to that of Coach, but they aren't as accessible (Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael by Michael Kors). By limiting access to their product, "luxury" good don't become commodities.
The second problem I have with Coach is branding. I'm not saying that I hate excessive branding because I would be a huge hypocrite. I absolutely love heavy branding. Yes, it's a little pretentious, but hey...you spent the money, you may as well flaunt it. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Chanel all have very inconic logos.
Because Coach is a very accessible brand to the public, their "C" print doesn't pack the same punch as other brands that are more selective with their markets. If you're walking around the mall, I would be shocked if you don't see at least two dozen Coach products. Yes, heavy branding is great, only when your brand makes up a small portion of the market, as opposed to dominating it. You almost get desensitized to the brand, and see it as an everyday brand versus a luxury brand.
My last problem with the brand, is not the brand itself, but the clientele. Your Coach bag is not a status symbol. Your Coach bag just means you have that much money, and think you're fashionable...when you're really not. I'm not saying there are people who don't genuinely like Coach, but I'm pretty sure they're in the minority of Coach customers. But for the, I want to say at least 80% of Coach customers, they just don't know any better; you're not fashionable, you're just lazy, and have however much money to spend on whatever.
Thoughts?
